about roy lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 and began painting and drawing as a hobby during high school in New York City. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Fine Art degrees from Ohio State University. His work evolved from a somewhat cubist style to abstract expressionism, then in 1961, responding to a challenge from his son to paint as well as the art in his Mickey Mouse comic book, Lichtenstein happened upon the wonderful pop style we associate with him today. In later years he experimented with futurism and surrealism, but ultimately he returned to pop art before his death in 1997.

Lichtenstein is best known for his comic book frame content and use of Ben-Day dots and word or thought bubbles. You can learn much, much more about him by visiting the sites on the links page.
